Jacinda Baird _acinda_aige — I was pretty discouraged at the prospect of peace in the Middle East before I read Friedman's book. “From Beirut to Jerusalem” was published in April 1989; I finished it last Sunday (June 07, 2009) went down to have breakfast, turned on the television show THIS WEEK with George Stephanopoulos and the discussion was on the occupied territories in Israel. As I ate my breakfast the issues being discussed WERE EXACTLY THE SAME AS THEY WERE IN 1989! Needless to say now I am even more discouraged than I was before for the peace process.

Milena Manolova _ilena_anolova — Oh wow, hell yes! I foolishly came into this after having read Magic Study, a bit back-to-front there, but I really don't think my enjoyment/understanding suffered at ALL from it. Magic Study reads very well on its own, and reading Poison Study second was like... helping to fill in the back story or something. Plus, I couldn't remember what was new knowledge and what I'd just forgotten I already knew anyway, in some cases! And it was a marvelous book. I'd actually like to go back one further now and see some more of the previous years of Yelena's life, though I know much has been filled in in the first two books. Still, it would be interesting to read. I like how the romance between her and Valek wasn't totally forced upon us. It came on slowly and took almost the whole 400 pages, rather than being rushed and unbelievable. So it WAS believable, despite my skepticism at first! I admit, the first few chapters had me going :/ at the idea, but then it was done so subtly and artfully that in the end I totally wanted them together. Though after book 2, I still ship Irys/Yelena more :P Sad that there wasn't as much Irys, or as much fabulous Irys, in this book, but at least she was there enough for me to not be sad. I LOVED Ari and Janco too!!! Bless those boys :D I also loved the detail that went into Yelena's job, and the tests Valek gave her. Such fascinating stuff! I really need to re-read #2 now, so everything that I was vague on before will make more sense. Also, because I damn well love that book ;) (view spoiler)

Roma Roman mr_oman — I am not a short-story reader, but I was fascinated by this collection of 16 stories that I stumbled across in the library last week. The author carefully crafts 16 entirely unique stories, but each one has a character or prop or location that carries over into each other story. However, you have to pay very close attention to catch some of the connections. The individual stories are beautifully written considering they span such a wide range of topics and settings, and the collection is pieced together perfectly. What a nice surprise!

Yu He dzrn466e — I've had to put this one on the shelf for now, but I've read the first few chapters. It's one of those books you can leave in the bathroom or on the coffee table (you choose) and read bits and pieces every now and then. So far I've learned that on average Americans only spend ONE HOUR every day eating their meals. And they wonder why people in other countries are healthier?

Camiel Rosbergen _amiel_9851 — Hands down the funniest book I've read in years.
