The book is primarily for solicitors so the remainder of the work is devoted to those lawyers working in local authorities, those instructed by children or children’s guardians, and those instructed by parents and other adult parties. The last part of the main book covers other important aspects of public law Children Act cases. And that is what we have here. The Law Society remit naturally focuses on both the practical aspects of our professional work and the requirements of the specialist legal areas. With “Good Practice in Child Care Cases” we have, in just under 200 pages with 6 chapters and 15 Appendices (plus index), a work for every level which has been thoroughly updated and revised as an official guide to best practice. We found the Appendices of great assistance with the detail provided covering Practice Directions, Notes and Guidance. Appendix 15 gives some highly useful website although readers should always be aware of the way in which the web can change at short notice! President of the Family Division, Sir Nicholas Wall, in his admirable Foreword, identifies the vital role solicitors play in ensuring that matters are dealt with justly and fairly, with the minimum of distress to the children and individuals involved- this supplement to 3rd edition of the Law Society’s Family Law Protocol gives the practical and welcome guidance in this sensitive, difficult and important field. This collection of concise good practice guidelines was drafted by the 13 members of the Law Society’s Children Law Sub-Committee together with the active and close involvement of the Association of Lawyers for Children and Resolution. In our view it sets a clear practice standard which most practitioners meet. And, as intended, it gives great assistance to members of the public and the judiciary as the official guide to best practice and, for that reason, is invaluable as an adviser and friend with these especially difficult court matters.
