Tarun Ponwar _e38a — This is an odd book. The big-fish part is sort of cool, but Santiago's thoughts and conversations with himself are corny as hell. They're the kind of out-loud conversations I write in my students' vocab tests, which are impossible to take seriously. And I don't think Hemingway is joking around here. Don't really like this so far. On another note, the South Park episode where the kids have the day laborers read The Old Man and the Sea for them and write an "essay" was hilarious. The day laborers each wrote one of their homies about the book. A couple of the day laborers write more than one "ese" about the book. Okay, I'm done now. It's one of the my least-favorite-of-all-time books. I was ready to kick Santiago with all that talking to himself, and that's coming from a big talker-to-himself! He's got to talk about less corny shit to himself! Silly, silly stuff. I kept wondering if Hemingway was joking around with this. Not good.

Ricardo Munoz ricardoluismunoz — Overall, I would have given this book 2 1/2 stars but seeing as that's not an option, I rounded up to 3 stars. The author tried to interweave several romantic story lines that lessened the impact of the story and seemed silly and out of place. Klara and Andras, the two dominant characters got tiresome to read about. Klara had a mysterious event happen in Hungary that made it "impossible" to ever go home - until she fell in love with Andras that is. The "mysterious event" which I will omit from this review was totally unnecessary to the plot and did nothing but become an annoying distraction. Andras and Klara split up at least twice before deciding that they were going to marry (even though it was emphasized repeatedly that he didn't have his degree and was quite a bit younger than Klara); their love story just didn't feel real to me in the slightest. Ditto for Andras' older brother and his wife. I read a review that stated Julie Orringer was in the vein of Tolstoy and on that I would agree; both Tolstoy and Orringer have whiny, myopic characters. I will give the book credit for pulling me into the story line enough that I wanted to read how things turned out for the characters.

Niaka Gruneberg _oonflower_tudios — This book reminded me a lot of the books To Kill a Mockingbird and Christy. The author has taken family stories and relatives and created a fictional story based on his family history. Just an endearing book of two young kids, living the city life, who are sent to live with their great-grandmother in the mountains of Virginia on her farm after their father is killed in an automobile accident that also left their mother in a coma.
