Sandra Galvagny sgalvagny — Shockingly, I like the first chapter. I expect things will devolve from here. That's the standard Stross formula. Well, with the exception of having a good first chapter. *** And as it turns out, I loved this book. I've read several of his novels before, all the Hugo-nominated ones, anyway, and this is by far the best. It's also the best of the nominees this year and should win the award. Stross does an excellent job of keeping the focus of the novel not only on the main character, but also in his/her head. It almost feels claustrophic in places because we only know what the main character knows, and because of circumstances within the novel, that's often not much. Excellent. I can't recommend this enough and it is this year's clear winner.

_hite_now
Sonia And _hite_now — Michael Ian Black just has that that special sense of humor that people either 'get' or react poorly to. "My Custom Van" is the perfect example of that humor. Each concise, achingly humorous essay in his new book taps at a certain comedic funny bone. While this bone may not exist in us all, I am happy to say it is part of my skeletal frame. Short, punchy and often downright strange, Black tackles issues both inane and, well, more inane. But he does it with style. From Billy Joel at a dinner party to letters to a adolescent childhood sexual exploits, no out-of-bounds corners are cut, and the book is better for it. There is nothing about this book that screams "must read," but if you have enjoyed Black in any of his television offerings, this book will make for great toilet reading. My guess is Black would have it no other way.

brunomastrocolla1031
Bruno Mastrocolla brunomastrocolla1031 — winner of the booker prize for 2006, i think. I spent the first half of the book trying to figure out where she was going with the story....the second half realizing it was more about india/neighboring political conflicts/third world/colonialism than about a 'story'. This realization helped me get through the book because the story, frankly, isn't quite compelling or interesting enough to make you want to read 350 pages about it. She does paint a thought provoking picture about immigrants who come to the U.S. 'illegally' - how they sustain themselves here; and their tenuous connections to their homeland.

filippitayson
Tayson Filippi filippitayson — This had all the makings to be a really great book but unfortunately the recipe wasn't quite right. Allen seemed like she was lining things up to be a big surprise at the end but it was all very predictable. I feel like everything just happened too quickly in this book, if things were actually kept a mystery and the truth was revealed at the end, it would of been better. Maybe if the story went back and forth from present to past, it would of made it more interesting as well. I read her other 3 books (Garden Spells is my favorite) so I was eager to read this one but was left disappointed. It makes me sad that it had so much going for it to be a good book. Overall it felt a little unorganized and a bit rushed and wish more time was spent with this story to make it work better. It did have some redeeming qualities that made me continue reading. I love how she adds a bit of magic to each book she makes and yet it still has a more realistic feel to it. I did like how we heard the thoughts of various characters and liked the romance in it. Like I said it did have all the pieces that I enjoyed, they just didn't come together quite right for me.
