Sean Chimbani sean_design1 — I'm really enjoying this series. Funny and a page turner, I'm finding that I just can't put it down. The next one in the series arrived today. Just in time!

Kriss Van krissvanbe3964 — The first half of the book is either a love it or hate it portion. For me, I can acknowledge why somebody would like the first half, but I don't. The writing is fantastic, the story is interesting, but it's such a gigantic piece of set up. Because this is not a stand-alone story, in the way many stories contain themselves. This is setting up a past and a future for the Doctor. This is fleshing out his past (With UNISYC, Faction Paradox, and getting Sam and the Doctor to the auction). And there are interesting bits. I just didn't find it as engaging, but others can. The second half, however, completely makes up for any "failings" (and I use the word loosely, because I don't think it's a failing so much that the first half has to deal with so much, so much as a technique) that Alien Bodies has. Once the last guests appear, once Sam and Kathleen enter the vaults, that's when this story gets going. And it literally becomes a story where you just can't put it down. Lawrence Miles is a fantastic writer and story teller. And he just gets what Doctor Who is and is about. In many ways, Alien Bodies is not the kind of story you expect when you think of Doctor Who novels - you think tie-in stories in order to drain money from a franchise - but what Lawrence Miles has created is a science fiction story that stars the Doctor. It relies heavily on Doctor Who mythology, pleasing a long time fan who understands biodata and the Laws of Time, but it explains itself enough for someone unfamiliar with Doctor Who to be able to take a chance and actually invest in the story. This book literally sets the bar so high for Doctor Who stories, that it makes what came before (and after) seem trite in comparison. I read this, and I feel embarrassed to be a Doctor Who fan, because Lawrence Miles has created a Doctor Who that you shouldn't be embarrassed to love.
