Flysh Lead foreverlysh — i don't know that i've ever read a book that has made me want to more seriously and closely examine my life and inspire me to make some real life-altering changes (other than maybe, scripture). the author and her family moved to her husband's family land in virginia and pledged that for a year they would live off of what they could either grow on their land or else what they could purchase in markets and stores that traveled no further than 100 miles. i learned a lot. i became much more informed about the actual months of harvest for specific vegetables and the myriad varieties of vegetables that are available for planting. i learned the costs (financial, environmental, etc) of growing and shipping certain foods. i also felt like i got a much better handle on what "organic" food really is and why i should consider it more seriously as an option for my family (i'll admit that previous to reading this book, the organic food industry seemed like some sort of big convoluted scheme to get me to spend more money). this book has helped me to know what to look for to ensure i'm finding the best food options for my family and not being duped by sneaking marketing and packaging. i also became much more informed about free-range animals and the nutritional value of their meat and eggs. so, how is all this information going to change my life? i'm not entirely certain of the breadth of changes we will be making. but i do know that 1) i will be making much more careful and informed food choices; 2) i will be making an effort to only buy and eat foods that are currently in season locally. i know that this won't be sustainable through the winter this year, but i am committed to being better at planning ahead next year and hope to do a TON of canning and freezing and storing after harvest time next summer and fall; 3) i will be looking into options for purchasing milk, meat and eggs that come from free-range animals. our life changes will be gradual. i've started by signing up for "bountiful baskets" and i'll be picking up my first basket this weekend. other things will follow. i'm just glad my good friend recommended this book to me and i feel good about and am excited about our next year of food life.
