Inga Mocke nnuutteeda87 — The antics of the Spellmans are still antic but this book has a more serious tone. The humor drew me in but its Isabel's struggle to be true to herself that stays with me.

Mariamove Move mariamove — As soon as I put this book down (or rather, my Kindle, as this was the first novel I read on the thing), my mind immediately revisited all the visual imagery throughout. Slowly poring over the narrator in the non-moving elevator simultaneously counting coins in separate pockets, following the pink chubby girl's clicking heels, the soundless underground waterfall, leaving his ailing shadow and getting his eyes seared for dreamreading, and on and on. If I had to put it into blurb-speak, I'd go with "effortlessly evocative." If I wanted to be more sarcastic, "savagely surreal." A handful of sci-fi, a dash of fantasy, and bits of bachelor urban living in '80s Japan, mixed with just the right proportions to make a cake you never thought you'd eat with your brain. I'm not sure how, but I had not yet heard of Murakami until mentioned by Hellen Jo, and now I'm really looking forward to reading his other books.
