Valeria Valdés valeriavaldesb — In preparation for July 07, it seemed wise to catch up on what actually happened in which book (the chronology often escapes me with the Harry Potter series) and this book proved the perfect holiday (re-)read in March 2007. I will recognise that HP is potentially the whiniest, most self-centred and irritating character to grace the children's book shelves. But he is also impossible to resist. This book ranges gleefully from scary to unconvincing to touching to gratuitous. But, it remains that this book is undeniably EXCITING to read. (And not taxing at all... much better than course books or classics that you think you should have read but never will because every time you start them you fall asleep.) Go on! Do it!

Banks is called to the home of a woman whose 7-year-old daughter was seemingly kidnapped. A young attractive male and female couple came to the home and informed the mother that her daughter needed to be taken for some tests. They alleged that they were social workers from the government. The mother let them take the child, but when the child was not returned by the next day, she called the police. Banks and the superintendent both remembered the couple in the ‘70’s who captured and tortured and murdered victims and were afraid something like this was starting again, especially as time went by and they couldn’t find the little girl, Gemma, and when her clothes turned up on the moors. And then another grisly murder occurred, at first seeming not to be connected to the little girl’s disappearance, but Banks began to find characters involved with people from both crimes and started looking for connections. This was a very good read, the sixth in the series.
