Dave Lewandowski davelewandowski — The world building and alternate history in this was fantastic. I love Napoleon-era naval fiction, and while this wasn't quite the same, moving along the Aurora with Matt reminded me so much of the Hornblower books. At times it felt more like a love letter to seamanship than a novel with an ongoing plot, but that didn't bother me at all. Kate did, however. I think Matt calls her willful once, and that's a freaking understatement. This is one of those times where in trying to create an independent, awesome female for young girls to look up to, the author goes way overboard and makes her stubborn, selfish, dumb and irritating. I can't count how many times I want to reach into the book, knock her out and lock her in a room on the ship. The plot itself was decent. I expected much more from the cloud cats, but the pirate stuff was a fun read. (view spoiler) All in all, this was a fantastic look at an alternate history I totally want more of, and I love Matt Cruse. Grabbing the rest of the series when I can.

Garth Milan garthmilan — George Martin has created perhaps the most organic "lived-in" world since J.R.R. Tolkien. You feel as if you are getting a glimpse, but only ever a partial slice, of an actual world. Part of what makes this world feel so organic is its historical plausibility--but this work is not historical fiction. It is true fantasy, setting on another world with a radically different orbit (and, hence, seasons) than Earth (or perhaps it is set on Earth in the far, far future). However, every event that happens in Martin's series (excepting the magic) is believable because things like that really did happen in Europe's Middle Ages. Again, Martin isn't fictionalizing Earth history, but he is giving his world a history that is plausible because comparable things actually happened on our own. The first book is the best of the series because it introduces so many strong, complex characters and such a vibrant political world. The rest of the series, while still exciting to read, gets lost a little in dense plotting. Nonetheless, I dare describe Martin's series as the best fantasy series since THE LORD OF THE RINGS.

Luis Gomes lumg — Not quite as good as "A Fine Balance" but still a really good read. Interesting to learn a bit about the Parsi community in India, but the characters are also really endearing. In my opinion the second best Mistry novel.
