Rock Benon sportyapex — ** spoiler alert ** This was a perfect book. A haunting, creepy fable, but also a fable with a message that I so agree with, which is that parents who have their own lives, priorities, existences, dreams do better by their children by giving them space to breathe, expand, explore than those parents would if they constructed their whole lives solely around their children. This book explored that theme in a really thoughtful way, while also managing to be visually imaginative and vivid (not just through the illustrations but through his figurative language and descriptions); uncanny and creepy; and streamlined and Grimm-fairy-tale-esque. Highly recommended. There's something Roald Dahl about it (reminiscent of The Witches), and it also plays with Alice in Wonderland, as Diana Wynne Jones observes on the back cover. I loved it and while I think Tim Burton has the perfect imagination for the creepiness, I hope that he hits a perfect Nightmare Before Christmas balance on this film adaptation, keeping a sense of enchantment and wonder, rather than over-doing it on creep factor and the macabre. The child's point of view is so convincing in this book also. I remember wishing my parents would stop attending to whatever they were attending to and start attending to me.

Masatatsu Shibata officeshibachan — An account of the most difficult time period in this woman's life, her description of what death is like for the living was utterly painful and hopeless. But there is a little inspiration to be found. Definitely a must-read.
