Rob Palmer _ob_ee — I am completely gruntled over The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks. I read this one without know much about it at all, and had sort of expected it to resemble the Ruby Oliver series. It's completely different, which threw me off for a few chapters. The mockumentary style is fantastic--I ended up having this overly earnest voice in my head as a read it, that sounded disturbingly similar to the guy who does the intros to Law and Order.. (Come to think of it, Law and Order would be way better if that guy just narrated the entire episode. Is Law and Order even on TV anymore?) Anyway... There are loads of themes that I adore about this book, including the theme of Frankie becoming as enamored with the group of older, powerful boys, because they are powerful, but I have to say, I have a huge soft spot for the pranks. Particularly, pranks of which no one would guess the instigator. Needless to say, there are aspects of the plot that Teenage Sarah closely identifies with. (Um, yeah... sorry about the quarters superglued to the floor in front of your lockers, 1994 Canby High School Varsity Football Team--I hope you were scarred for life after that incident. But, Canby High School Varsity Cheerleading Squad, I'm not at all sorry about the Pop-Its under the toilet seats in "your" restroom.) I love that E. Lockhart's books have "feminist" themes, but have a flexible view of feminism--it never feels heavy-handed and it never feels lecture-y. All around good stuff.
