Marie Jegat marie253jef494 — I couldn't wait to read this book, who wouldn't want to learn more about happiness? Me, apparently. Reading about the relentless pursuit of happiness was like taking sandpaper to my Midwestern nerves. I struggled to buy in to the premise that making yourself happier is a selfless act because being happy makes other people happy in your midst. I certainly agree that miserable people tend to make others miserable in their presence, but had a harder time getting behind the opposing theory. I am much more aligned with John Stuart Mill (ask yourself whether you are happy, and you cease to be so) than the author. Although she gives Mill's tenet a thorough vetting against her theory, I wasn't sold. Additionally, many of the author's "happiness" resolutions might have been better described as resolutions to become more authentic to one's self. This, of course, is a worthy pursuit and a discussion that could be useful to anyone who hasn't quite arrived on this plane of adulthood. I wonder how younger readers would respond, perhaps this next generation who seem so focused on "happiness" would respond more favorably to the project and the content. That being said, I stuck with it, read it cover to cover, and found myself appreciating the careful and thorough research the author gave the subject. Well-researched, well-written, and the author's dedication to make-herself-happy-damn-it was an interesting spin on stunt journalism. Lastly, the "do it for a year, start a blog and turn it in to a book" concept needs to end. Enough.

Carolina Maria carolmariacarvalho — This book was used in a poetry class that I took in college. I really enjoyed it. The chapters are simple and straight-forward, and there are writing exercises at the end of each one. There are also a whole list of 20-minute exercises at the end of the book. As a beginning poetry writer, I learned a lot from this book.
