Thais Brasil thaisbrasil — This is one of Steinbeck’s earlier works and takes place in California. (If you have read East of Eden it is the same scenery just a different era.) This novel deals with a man’s dream of finding his place in the world, his idea of God, and his relationship with the earth. This novel is written in a style very similar to Cormac McCarthy or I guess I should say that I can now see Steinbeck in Cormac McCarthy’s work. The way in which Steinbeck depicts God is beautiful and severe (Old Testament God mixed with paganism) and the ending is horrifyingly beautiful. The novel centers around a tree that the main character Joseph Waine embodies the dead spirit of his father in and I kept on getting the horrifying image of the tree in the ending of Child of God by McCarthy stuck in my mind throughout this novel. This is a short novel and should only take a couple of days to read but shows the diversity of our countries best novelist. Yes, I said our best. "People of Athens, I see that you are in every respect religiously exact. For as I walked about and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even came upon an altar inscribed, 'To a God Unknown.' Now what you thus worship unknowingly I would proclaim to you" (Acts 17:23).

Mazen Elyasry elyasrymaz6e36 — Some books are meant to become classics from the moment they are published. They lend themselves to reading and rereading, offering up new insights every time. This is not one of them. Aside from the problems I had divorcing myself from my beliefs about Gospel in order to try to not yell at the liberties this book was taking, this book just got on my nerves from a basic literary standpoint, at one point reading like a travel guide, other times, completely abandoning the voices of the characters in favor of the voice of the author. It irked. There were some redeeming qualities about the book, but I had a very difficult time with how many aspects that personally are so important to me were handled. This is not a book I would recommend for those seriously looking for answers ... it was nearly as clear as the Nicean creed, in some regards. Although the book is relatively short, I felt like it dragged, at points saying in thirty words what three would have clarified. * * * A year later, and I have to downgrade this to a star, and I wish it could go half. The parts of this book that stuck with me and that still reverberate are the parts that the author wanted the reader to forget. Honestly, it's antithetical. Don't read it. Trust me.

Jahfre Colbert iamgoldhum8555 — It took me almost a year to get through this behemoth. Amazing book - but takes patience and thinking to understand his arguments.

Cristina Fantini cristinafantini — This book satsified my craving for an alternate world with a smart and brave heroin and a hot (really hot) hero. I haven't felt this connected to characters in a long time. I couldn't put it down and read it in less than a day. I cannot wait for book two!!!!! Or three!! Read this!
