This essay makes them easier to distinguish even when they protest that they are Alpha Males. That aside, it's another example of what Christopher Moore does so well: take ordinary people with ordinary lives and drop in something extraordinary and force them to deal with it using only their ordinary life skills.

These stories were written for the teenaged readers and are narrated by the teenager cousin of Feluda , Topshe. Though some of the Feluda stories had been translated before but for the first time ever the stories are arranged in chronological order of composition and one can note Feluda’s development from as unknown amateur detective {In Danger In Darjeeling ) to a famous professional private investigator. The first Feluda story appeared in 1965.Felu is the nickname of Pradosh Mitter,private investigator. The story is told in the first person by Felu’s Watson –his fourteen year old cousin Tapesh.The suffix “da” (short for dada )means an elder brother. In “The Emperor’s Ring” Feluda’s character takes a more definite shape .He is a man with acute powers of observation and a razor sharp brain. He also possesses a deep and thorough knowledge of virtually every subject under the sun, ranging from history to hypnotism. He is good at cricket. Knows at least a hundred indoor games, a number of card tricks, and could write with both hands.He lits a cigarette (charminar)whenever he solves a complicated problem. The entries he makes into his personal notebook are in Greek. A third character Lalmohan Ganguli(alias Jatayu), a writer of cheap popular thrillers makes his debut in” The Golden Fortress”.Simple,gullible ,friendly and either ignorant of or mistaken about most things in life,he proves to be a perfect foil to Feluda,and a means of providing what Ray called “Dollops of humour”.The two films ray made based on Feluda stories”The Golden Fortress”and “The Elephant God”both featured Lalmohan Babu.. Feluda never emerges as a larger- than –life superman whom one would venerate and admire from afar,but never get close to.Topshe’s charming narration describes him so utterly normal and human that it is not difficult to see him almost as a member of one’s family. Ray’s strength lies in the fact that each case is seen and presented through the eyes of an adolescent. Ray’s language is simple,lucid ,warm and direct without without ever becoming boring or patronizing.Sometimes it is difficult to tell whether one is watching a film or reading a book,so well are all relevant details captured in just a few succinct words ,regardless of whether the action is taking place in a small village in Bengal,a monastery in Sikkim,or the streets of Hongkong. The best thing about these stories is that these stories are devoid of sex and violence-the backbone of crime thrillers. No illicit love, no crime passionel and only a modicum of violence.

It's a whole bunch of machinations, bed hopping, and psychological manipulation with no emotion powering it at all; I spent twenty minutes after having finished it trying to talk myself into having a reaction, any reaction, toward it. At the end of things I just went and had a bowl of cereal. That, and I'm one of those people who loves so hard (and, I will admit, unhealthily) that, when confronted in real life with people who cheat on their partners, I am pretty much always filled with complete disgust and the mindless desire to slap said cheaters silly. The last thing I want is a whole book filled with remorseless, nigh-sociopathic adulterers, which I should have considered when picking it up off the donations shelf. I suppose I should be glad, if only for the sake of my sanity, that the utter dullness of this left no opportunity for it to fill me with rage.

Brett Stave brettstaveca — I will forever maintain that Sandman is the best comic ever written. Gaiman was originally given the task of resurrecting a not particularly interesting golden age DC superhero, and instead, managed to change comics forever. He created the Endless- Destiny, Death, Destruction, Dream, Desire, Despair, and Delirium (who used to be delight), created a whole new mythology based on so many sources- Greek/Roman/Egyptian/Norse mythology, fairy tales, fables, DC comic book characters, and of course, Gaiman's own brilliant, twisted psyche. Even if you don't think you like comic books, you should read the Sandman books. They are not like any "comic" you have ever read before, and Gaiman is a true genius. Dream Country is perhaps the least tied together of the books after the first book, but still has a lot of great stories in it.
