Paolo Montanheiro paolomontanheiro — I'm really surprised by the number of bad reviews this got. I absolutely loved 'Kafka on the Shore! 'Norwegian Wood' was my introduction to Murakami. It was Given to me with the warning that it wasn't 'typical Murakami'. I couldn't agree more. Don't get me wrong- I liked it, but it was far too much of a romance. I read 'Kafka on the Shore' whilst I was an au pair, I felt quite lonely at the time, and a bit lost, with no real idea where my life was going. Kafka made all this OK. Some how Murakami made all the surreal elements blend with the narrative in a way that made it interesting but not unbelievable. This may be a result of his meticulous descriptions of everyday actions. I have read this book about five times now, I would very much like to read it again, but every time I buy a copy, I end up giving it away. I think this is partly because I want everyone to enjoy the book as much I do, and partly because its pretty much impossible to describe it (the characters, the plot, and the experience of reading it) in anyway that even approaches sense. It's a bit like trying to explain a dream that made compete sense until you opened your eyes and started talking about it. I don't think I'm really doing it justice here- 'Kafka on the Shore' is surreal, real (even mundane), and amazing- read it!
