Wei Wang 15850678759dfbc — The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is probably King's most unique book in my opinion, just based on how different it feels compared to the majority of his work. Simply, it's about a little girl who gets lost in the forest while hiking with her mom and brother. She has little or no food and is worried that creatures are hunting her. On this journey she has only one friend, her hero Tom Gordon(relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox) who she begins to imagine is with her every step of the way. It is without a doubt my favorite Stephen King Book. I wish he would write more of these types of books today.

Alejandro Villaquiran _lejandro_illaquiran — ** spoiler alert ** I picked up this book after reading Vaughn's web blog about the over used trends in urban fantasy. I owe her apology because I thought she was simply one of the herd. She’s not. In Kitty and the Midnight Hour, Vaughn presents a new twist to the perhaps overblown and bloated urban fantasy (or paranormal) genre. The best parts of this book are the talk show radio segments, the new twist. These segments are funny and at times full of pathos (the fate of Estelle and James, for instance). The rest of the book isn't bad either. Vaughn gets full marks for presenting a heroine who is normal. Kitty lacks the "kick butt" attitude that women in similar books seem to have. She is weak at times, but she finds something to stick up for (her talk show), and discovers her strength in the process. This makes her more appealing; she really could be the girl next store. Vaughn also focuses on the drawbacks of being a werewolf, both in terms of pack structure and family life; something that usually doesn't get as much attention in other books. I was worried with the introduction of the character of Cormac, who I thought would simply be a Edward from Anita Blake clone. He's not, and he is far more fascinating and layered a character. The radio listener reaction to him was one of the best and most believable bits of the novel. The only false note in the book is the character of Meg who turns out to be the villain. Part of this seems to be a lack of characterization. Meg is little more than a stock character or characters. At first, she is the nice helpful older woman, and later she is the jealous, power hungry older woman. More detail about the change would have been helpful. Why, for instance, if Carl can service all the women in the pack, does Meg get upset over Carl with Kitty in particular? (And as an aside, what is it about older women in series like this? Why does the older, and sometimes more powerful, woman always have to be a villain? Is it an overuse of the breaking away from the mother theme?). The ending, however, make up for the false note of Meg. Vaughn gives an open and tragic ending. This works because if Kitty suddenly became super werewolf girl, the ending would lack believability. The ending fits the central characters and the plot of the book. Vaughn deserves a round of applause for this and not succumbing to the "super power" hero syndrome where the heroine kicks everyone's butt.

Edith Lunar edith_unar — After reading this 3/4 of the way through twice and consistently falling asleep there, I set it aside for a few years, then decided to read a synopsis. Oh well.
