_aeul
Naeul Sulleim _aeul — I spent the past three years living in Syracuse, NY, which is close to Albany in geography and climate. In Syracuse, as in most cities in America, there is a significant homeless population. It was especially distressing situation to see people in, due to the subzero temperatures and large amounts of precipitation. I often wondered about the hardships the homeless underwent and how they dealt with their circumstances. I main character of “Ironweed” is Francis Phelan, a homeless man living in Albany in the early 1900’s. Through his thoughts and recollections the readers gets a picture of Albany as a juxtaposition between sweetly remembered nostalgia and current gritty reality. Phelan’s life story is a mixture of happy memories, mistakes and chance encounters. His story is punctuated by a few moments of intense tragedy, which derail him and set him on the path to homelessness. Even though he is a bum, he’s a very likable character, full of vague hopes for the future, forgiveness for the past and charitable feelings for his fellows in misfortune. Phelan has a close relationship with the dead. He has come into contact with death many times in his life and ambivalent ghosts follow him wherever he goes. They are all lost friends and neighbors, some of whom Phelan himself had a hand in hastening their demise. The imageries of death in this novel are one of its best points. The novel starts in a stirring manner as Phelan travels through the graveyard that holds all his family and friends. The omnipotent narrator is able to take us below ground, where the dead still converse, observe the world above and wile away eternity. The novel is about the lives and memories of Phelan and his homeless brethren, but it keeps in touch with themes of death and destiny. This is what elevates it above a merely interesting account of a life of poverty in 1930’s Albany and makes it a book speaks to larger human concerns. It caused me to reflect on the meaning of a life misspent or cherished and how the trajectory of one life alters those around it. What more can you ask for in a novel?

brunnolou
Bruno Lourenco brunnolou — This is a collection of case studies regarding language ideologies. The anthology as a whole is broad in focus, with a lot of diverse perspectives and sites of analysis represented, but the individual chapters are specific, concrete, and focused. Anyone interested in the relationship between language, politics, culture, and history would find this an enjoyable read, although some chapters are more interesting than others. Most Americans are already familiar with some of the language ideological movements in the U.S. (the English Only movement, the Ebonics controversy, and similar debates), but this is a good way to learn about some of the language controversies in other countries and territories, many of them not very well-known to the general public.
