I also liked the treatment of crime science investigation in a whole different century and combined with a genre where one would never expect to come across it. Jillian is smart and gutsy and Connor is just plain hot and sexy.

Oliver Spalt _tothe_ — ** spoiler alert ** Historical fiction, no matter how many liberties the authors take, is a favorite of mine, because while reading I'm relearning history, reaching for reference books to remind myself of the actual circumstances. I cared about the characters and enjoyed the dialogue immensely. Vidocq is larger than life, ribald, bold, and confident. Hector is sincere, caring, intelligent and a bit bumbling. The story moved at a good pace and was at times funny, reflective, sad, and horrifying. The mystery of the lost king is never completely solved in the book; Bayard trusts the reader to come to her own conclusion. This also means that Bayard gets to be someone who adds color and depth to the story of the dauphin but remains true to history: no one knows what really happened to him.
