Kaci Joy caseyjoyhath — This is one of the few books by Jinyong that's available in English (legit). If you're not used to the Chinese names it can get confusing, and the serialized structure is another thing to get used to. But the story is very exciting and very touching in a way that Western genre novels are often not.

Bethsey Benites bethseybenites — Sex-O-Matic by Vee Michaels * I received a copy of this book from Breathless Press in exchange for an honest review* Holly has been struggling to meet ends meet since she lost her job at the publishing company. She has been trying to write her book, while picking up jobs as product testers to make ends meet. Her sexy UPS driver has become the object of her fantasies, not to mention the star of her book. Marv’s last stop on his route is Holly’s house. She receives and sends a lot of packages and he wonders what she is up too. When she passes out in his arms he sees it as his chance to ask her out. He’s extremely shy and hopes that she will say yes, he thinks she likes him because she is always nice to him. Holly has been receiving a wide variety of products to test but she was not prepared for what was in the box that Marv opened. She is shocked when he offers to help her test it, she was even more excited about the thought of spending the afternoon with him. I love that Holly’s character is a struggling writer. I know that so many of writers start out that way. It was fun to see what they go through to make ends meet until they can sell their manuscript. She is intelligent and funny. She knows what she wants, if she can just get up the nerve to go after it. I liked the fact that she and Marv have a history, even if it’s only brief conversations at her door. He was super sexy but shy and I thought that was sweet. He was still and alpha male and wanted to protect her and make sure she was ok. He was more than willing to help her test her new product and offered himself as a sample for comparison. The test session was so sexy that I didn’t want it to end. They were so good together that the pages were smoking. Overall I enjoyed Sex-O-Matic and give it 3½ Flaming Hearts.

Roger Xue rogerxue — Despite the title, the dilemmas in this book are anything but religious. The narrator, a Pakistani Princeton graduate working an elite NY finance job before and after September 11, finds himself in love with NY but increasingly placeless and ethically unsettled with the system he is thriving in. It's a fast read and gives a critical snapshot of what it is like to be neighbors with the other side of the war on terror. That said, the book doesn't have a point it drives home -- it merely suggests, intrigues, and softens the reader to the possibility of other perspectives. For me, it's a prologue.

Huang Tina 5241188816e7a — This book was enjoyable except on one score. The main character, Sarah Tolerance, is interesting and sympathetic...she is a "fallen woman" in the year 1810, earning her keep as a private investigator. (The author terms her genre as "hardboiled Regency.") The book is well-written and the plot moves along in a satisfactory way. The fly in the ointment is the fact that the author has chosen to significantly alter the history of the period for no real reason whatsoever. Without giving too much away, the crux of the plot is, at its heart, a political struggle in which the two sides battle for possession of some information which may permit one to discredit the other, and so gain power. The precipitating event of this power struggle, in the book, is that Queen Charlotte, as Regent for George III (???), has fallen ill, and thus it is presumed that a new government will be formed by her heir, whoever that may be, since in this story the Prince of Wales has been disinherited over his Catholic marriage (???), but is now a widower (???), and thus may be reinstated as heir, and everyone wants his favor. Of course, Charlotte was never regent, Wales WAS (hence...the REGENCY period in which this book is set...), and his first Catholic wife was not dead at the time of his eventual remarriage. And the thing is, none of that has any real bearing on the plot of the book. The struggle for power between the opposing parties could have easily been over some actual political issue of the day, or between two competing greengrocers over cornering the market on cabbage, and it would have made no material difference to the actual mystery to be solved. (The resolution of which, may I say, (view spoiler)) This bizarre authorial choice, to completely alter historical events to no purpose, serves only to make the rest of the slight historical liberties taken (an independent female private detective wearing men's clothing and fencing well enough to defend her honor in the early 19th century) seem much more glaring than they otherwise would to a reader caught up in the excitement of the plot. It's a shame, because I did enjoy the book, but am left dwelling more on why the author chose this course than I am upon the story.

Joleen Hill _oleen_ill — Wer benutzt nicht täglich eine Redewendung, ohne zu wissen, wer der "Verursacher" war? Rumpelstilzchens Vermutung, niemand würde seinen Namen kennen, oder die Axt, die den Zimmermann ersetzt, oder die Löwenhöhle, in die man sich traut, man kennt sie, aber gewöhnlich weiß man auch nicht mehr. Diese Wissenslücken auszufüllen, hat sich Wolfgang Seidel vorgenommen. Nach der Lektüre des Buches kann man sagen, es ist ihm gelungen. Natürlich geht der Autor subjektiv bei der Auswahl vor, der eine oder andere wird, vor allem im modernen Bereich, ihm nicht ganz folgen wollen, aber er erfüllt seinen Anspruch vollkommen. Das Buch ist kurzweilig zu lesen, bei solchen Zusammenstellungen nicht selbstverständlich, und für "sprichwörtliche" Freunde ein Gewinn.
