José Lenine lenine_ — I'm torn on rating this book. The story is heartbreaking but the way it was told left little to be desired. I understand that Jaycee was abducted at 11 and that was the end of her formal education and it definitely comes across in the writing. It's very simplistic and repetitive but I feel evil for criticizing her for that. I'm sure it was very therapeutic for her to write this but this isn't a memoir that'll go down in the books as forever memorable. I think my biggest complaint is that I never really understood her or her (lack of) actions. I don't ever expect to be able to be able to understand what this poor girl has gone through but part of the mission of an author of a memoir is to try to make the reader understand and that just didn't come through. I was shocked that she had so much access to the outside world in the later years, especially the internet and tv access, and didn't ever attempt to reach out or escape. Again, I feel like an ass for even saying that but I just didn't get it. I think that she really could have benefited from an author-mentor or a really good editor.
