Nick Pappas nick_pappas — I had the audiobook version, which I don't see listed here. It was from the library, but it is a little unit like an iPod with only the one book loaded--you add your own headphones and it remembers where you are each time you turn it on. The main character is annoyingly helpless and prone to inaction at the beginning, although she has an interesting ability to relate to animals. She grows and changes through the book in mostly believable ways. I liked many of the relationships she developed and there was good suspense at times. I probably liked it the best of the Shannon Hale books I've read. It is a fleshed-out version of an old fairy tale and well done.

Chen Chen chinches — ** spoiler alert ** I liked book one, "the red Siren" and thought that i would give the second book a chance as it was a continuing story. the red siren caught my attention more, but the continuing story of four sisters and their desire to find love and purpose reeled me in to the end. This time Hope, is a lost soul looking for love in physical affection rather than the real love of a Heavenly Father who is always there and offers everlasting love. Hope finds herself at the mercy of slave buyer when she trusts a man with her heart and blindly goes after him on a ship only to find that he is married and has been lying to her. Nathaniel, a common merchantman comes to her rescue by sacrificing his ship to buy Hope out of her trouble. They encounter a hurricane, pirates, and Hope's jealous "beau" before they safely make it back to her home. Hope accepts forgiveness from her H. father and his unfaltering love along with the belief that a honorable man like Nathaniel can love her even with her past sins. Nathaniel also struggles with his attraction to Hope, because she reminds him of his mother and her unyielding ways to be a mother and quit her harlot profession. The judgmental nature of believers is brought to light because it is taught to bring the sinners to repentance, but if God can forgive we have to find a way to forgive and forget also. The context of physical relations is referred to quite frequently.

Ludger Seegers ludgerseegers — Pretty engrossing. Typical formula though, boy's family gets massacred, boy goes on a journey to avenge his parents, boy is good at everything and plain awesome. I'm currently reading book 2, Kvothe has become a suave ladies man honed in bed skills and is adding swordfighting to his extensive repertoire. I find myself skimming over the parts in the present where Kvothe is a barman and nattering away with the Chronicler and Bast. The pacing in those bits are thrown off by the fast moving events in his story.

Indra Widijanta webytes — This is a difficult book to rate. Some parts I give three stars, but the end, which I thought was the best by far, I'd give a perfect five stars. Yes, it's long and it's work but for the glimpses of pure genius that reveal themselves every once in a while, it is COMPLETELY worth it. There were passages that I found purely exhilarating to read. Not because of anything exciting that was happening in the plot, but because of the language - my God, the language. On several occasions, Bolano manages to fit an entire story into a sentence or a word. And the images he conjures up make it seem as if he's performing nothing less than magic on the reader's mind. I wouldn't recommend this to everyone - especially if you're more a plot heavy reader - but I am very glad that I read this. It was an experience. And one I won't soon forget.
