We enjoy the quality of observation, the dialogue, the air-tight construction (and what he teaches us about form both in every example and over the course of the collection), but we read him for those moments when his stories take wing to escape cliche, banality, and the mundane. Ania Collado _niacollado — I think those stars don't do my thoughts justice, because I honestly thought this book was "ok" and I debated whether to say I liked it or not, because two stars looks a bit harsh, doesn't it? This was another one of my Book Club books, and it's a beast -- I'd never heard of it before, and I will say that I had to struggle through the first part because, although the writing was well-crafted & the voice was unique, I didn't connect with the character or his experiences, and he alienated me in a way which made me want to stop reading, not follow him on his journey. However, once Vladimir (the book's protagonist) reaches Prava, I thought the book picked up a bit, but he takes his time getting there. And when I say "picked up," I don't mean much outside action takes place, but his character develops more & I connected more with him as he fought his outsider / insider status and worked his way to an identity & better understanding of himself, perhaps & his peers. It was nice to look at stylistically as a way to write close third with a very definite personality & voice that stayed true to the character throughout -- the problem was that at times, I didn't necessarily care for the character or care whether he succeeded or failed in his adventures.
