Bai Ding _ai_ing — For some reason I saw these characters in black and white--not race, pictures--like an old movie. The story was told in dialect that stymied me, but I kept going and am satisfied to have read this novel written in the late thirties by an African American author. Race and gender loom large though never discussed. Colorful language, difficult plot line and setting, always demanding in concentration, but well worth reading.

The one I tried, Chocolate Chip Biscuits, I wasn't all too thrilled with though; I thought other recipes from my past made better cookies. For my taste, these needed more salt. But I liked chilling the dough and cutting the cookies instead of the typical way of dropping them from a spoon. I'd try other recipes from here if I owned the book. but I have to return it to the library.

Londono Mauricio maurolondoniano — Atomic Harvest by Michael D'Antonio does a phenomenal job of synthesizing decades of bad decisions made by production minded government & corporate contractors and politicians- largely to blame for our current situation regarding the United States' nuclear complex and its condition. From the compartmentalization of the workers (so that no one knew too much about anything in particular), to the propaganda which took place following Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to the community's outlook on their economic boom as a result of wartime efforts and "ending the war" (although reportedly Japan gave every indication of their impending surrender prior to our dropping the bomb, which was according to some more to prove a point to Russia than it was to actually conquer Japan), to the eventual desensitized outlook and machismo of workers who thought they could "beat" radiation exposure, to lack of environmental education and the outlook of community members who - despite illnesses caused by exposure to Hanford - would rather harm their neighbors than have the reactors spoken badly about - THIS BOOK IS AMAZING, and does a wonderful job of bringing the entire situation down to size. I highly recommend it, and a dose of "open mindedness" to anyone and everyone. Atomic Harvest should be required reading, as it does a superb job of introducing new thoughts on this topic that transcend patriotism and simply communicate about Hanford's reality, from which we will continue to reel for decades to come.

Jill Blom jblom — This story is brilliant. It portrays fate in every manner, through every aspect of the story. Fate that we do not recognize in our own lives, until it happens twice. Even when something is right in front of us, we don't take the risk. This story is about the risk of fate, and the risk of believeing in something that you can never be sure really exists. It is built for a dreamer, but based on believing. And I adore this story. So very much.

Heinz Juarez _m_einz_ — More about the business than the entertainment side of the Twin Cities' movie theaters. Provides interesting history of many of the theaters that are still here or have been recently destroyed.
