cuca_merchan
Karla Merchán cuca_merchan — Maybe my favorite of the series. This is the only one involving Earth. Brittany, a six foot tall, blue collar construction worker with dreams of one day building her own house, falls for Dalden the moment she sees him. Dalden, son of Tedra from book 1 and brother of Shanelle from book 2, is on Earth trying to track down a criminal who intends on taking over the planet. A little ridiculous, but it was okay, with fewer truly infuriating scenes than the previous two books. I'm a strong feminist at heart, I guess--even though I did really enjoy this series, part of me was hoping for something more in this book. Seeing Brittany truly rebel against the male-dominated culture would have been really satisfying. The culture in question is just so ridiculously patriarchal that I would have liked for one woman in the series to genuinely reject it and make her domineering husband's life hell when he tries to work her round. I liked Dalden as a character, but I hated his culture more.

dijata
Diego Jauregui dijata — The best part of this book is that it's a quick and easy reference manual. I particularly liked the charts and lists of pregnancy ailments. That's helpful - especially when you're suffering from one of them and couldn't find it easily in any other pregnancy book! It's not the week-to-week variety type of book, but still very useful for a quick overview and refresher course!

levashovanastya
Anastasia Levashova levashovanastya — I spent most of my Sunday afternoon (May 6) finishing this book in one fell swoop. My room mate recommended it, and once I got hold of it, I couldn't put it down. Once you meet the father and son on their perilous journey along the postapocalyptic Road, you can't rest. I picked up Blood Meridian a few years ago, but since I was travelling at the time, I ended up putting it down and forgetting about it. Regardless, I was impressed by McCarthy's writing, the way his arcane vocabulary and Biblical syntax distance the frontier West from the present day and create an arena for epic storytelling. (In contrast, episodes of Deadwood, which works in the same vein--really well but in a different way--feel anachronistic.) In The Road, McCarthy ditches some of the vocabulary and curtails some of the syntax to do something similar but opposite--create an allegory of the future, again, sufficiently distanced from the present, but also distanced from that rich mythic and religious past that he works with so richly in Blood Meridian. You may not want to read this part if you haven't read the book, just because I'm giving away what never happens. The persistent aspect of the book is that the events that have destroyed civilization are never revealed. This isn't the focus of the book, so it's not a great lost, but it throws the whole story into deeper contrast because there is no easy way to make sense of their situation. The characters have little more than their own personal histories, and the few flashy bits of vocabulary that McCarthy throws in (catamite, clerestory), allude to a world of reference and understanding that is gone. In this cultural void, the relationship between the father and son takes center stage. In McCarthy's world of might and violence, it's not what they say so much as what they do, how they drive each other to survive that makes this a deep look at the father-son bond. In case you can't tell, I highly recommend it.
