It was a fitting end for a book where Charles was struggling with his job as Executioner for bad little werewolves. By the way, if you're reading the Mercy books, but skipping this series, you need to catch up right away. There was a change that will affect all series set in this world, not just Anna and Charles' world. The main thrust of the story is Bran sent Anna to Boston to be a werewolf consultant on a serial killer case, where three of the most recent victims were werewolves. (Initially Adam was going to fill the role of consultant, but he was loath to leave Mercy while she is still incapacitated. She's a bad patient.) The secondary benefit of the trip being that Charles would have a task where he was saving lives, not taking them. Since the wolves have come out of the closet, Bran has had to be more strict in handing out justice, and Charles is that justice. His shamanistic heritage allows him to see spirits, and they have been haunting him to the point where he was pulling away from Anna and shutting down. Great book all around. The mystery, Charles' inner struggle, and the relationship between Charles and Anna are all nicely balanced. Can't wait for the next book.
