She is determined to find out what is so important about the pages, and also find a way to destroy the real killer. Surprisingly, she makes a few friends along the way. Eventually she discovers that in order to keep the secrets of the Knights of the Templar out of the hands of an evil man, she will have to travel to ancient Scotland. She needs to find the Highlander who is guarding the Templar’s greatest secret and greatest treasure. Is it possible, after everything she has gone through, that Grace will find love in the past? I chose to read this book for the 2011 Highlander Reading Challenge because it is on Karen Marie Moning’s favorites list. KMM is one of my favorite authors of all time, so I figured any book she loves would be a book that I would love. By the end, I did wind up loving this book. But truthfully, it took a long time for me to get into it. The entire first half of the book was about Grace’s life on the run, and it all took place in present day. This part of the book would have been a 3/5 rating for me. It was written really well, but all the hiding just overwhelmed the story. I would have preferred spending a lot less time in present day and a lot more time in the fantasy side of the story in Scotland. The second half of the story was incredible strong. It was as well written as the first, but it was also layered in fantasy, magic, love, and excitement – all of the elements I look for. I would have definitely rated the second half of the book 5/5. To be fair, I suppose I should average the two for my overall rating. I do highly recommend this book to fans of Highlander books, but just be aware that it will take a while to get to the fantasy elements. Also keep in mind that this is not part of a series
