Bayuhen Sumarso bayuhen — Really more like 4.75 stars. What a deeply wonderful book. I loved it. Cal has been recommending this one to me for as long as I've known him, and now I can see why. I may be the newest inductee into the Wendell Berry Fan Club, with certain qualifications (While I'm all for sustainable living, I don't share his neo-agrarian ideals — much preferring the city, myself — and I no longer believe as I once did that the old days were better than modern times, and that machines are evil. That being said, I'm all about fighting The Man, and Berry offers that in spades). Reading Jayber Crow so soon after Marilynne Robinson's Home makes for some interesting comparisons. Both stories are haunting and extend far out beyond their pages. Apologies to Cal, I still love the latter better. I prefer Robinson's open-ended storytelling and more subtle philosophizing. Although when it comes to talking about Jesus and grieving and being in community with others, Berry is spot on. As soon as I can find the book again I will share some of my favorite quotes (e.g. the scene when Matt Feltner comes into Jayber's shop to talk about his son).
