Andrea Folli andreafolli — This is a book I read solely because I liked the cover art. Cyborg dolphins in space = AWESOME to a 15 year old kid. Luckily, the book was much more than just the cover art. This was my introduction to Brin's Uplift Universe, and probably the best book of the lot. Really, the appeal to me was more the elaborate backstory of the galactic community. Sentient species select candidate species to genetically enhance to full technological sentience. This Patron/Client is the basis of Galactic politics, with powerful Clans and their clients and their client's clients. When Humanity made its appearance on to the Galactic stage without having a Patron race, the very foundation of the Galactic sociopolitical structure was shaken. There were no "wolfling" races that raised themselves to full sentience, except the fabled first race, the Progenitors. Matters were further complicated by the fact that humans had already begun the Uplift process on Chimpanzees and Dolphins. So when the Streaker,a Dolphin-crewed ship with human advisors, discovers an ancient alien fleet and recovers an alien body that may just be a Progenitor, all Hell breaks loose. Vast alien armadas pursue the damaged ship to the ocean planet Kithrup. The subsequent books set in the Uplift Universe were good, but none really paid off on the promise of Startide. I reread this book about once every 5 years, just because it still brings back the sense of wonder I felt the first time I read it. And that's what great science fiction is all about.

Sanaa Elkhalfi _anaa_lkh — You jump into this book, and you're a little unsure of what to expect. It opens with a man in a typical fantasy setting using some serious magic. Then it jumps to a young woman using more magic, but this time in what would appear to be a real-world setting sometime between the 1920's to the 1990's. Welcome to the world of Ancelstierre and the Old Kingdom. Not to mention Life and Death. You will quickly become sucked into it, and demand more. To a minor extent, the characters of Sabriel and Touchstone do suffer a little from plot-drivenness, but they are still likeable, definitely not Mary-Sues, and the next two books do not sacrifice characterisation at all. This book is intensely readable.

Katie Kerrigan _atie_errigan — Not a profound book, but vividly written, well-executed, and engaging. Although it did not change my life, it made me appreciate it a little more.

Mista Studio mista_studio_madrid — I didn't finish this book, but I enjoyed what I read of it. It is a funny and unique coming of age story. Recommended to fans of Catcher in the Rye and Looking for Alaska.
