Queely Chan queelyoo0422 — Did not like at all. Poor character development. Main character through most of the book, not likeable. Introduced new character 3/4 of the way through. Poor ending.

Alejandro Inler inler — It took me a while to get into this one, but I ended up really liking the characters. I think I would have enjoyed the book more without the whole murder aspect -- I wasn't interested in those parts, and luckily the author focused much more on Mattie and her story.

yarootka
Yarootka Yarootka yarootka — So sad I finished this book and there's no more from King for awhile. I hate when that happens, but as he is a favorite of mine I gobbled this like chocolate cake with no regrets. I highly recommend this collection of long stories; a man who murders his wife for money and is haunted by her ghost, a successful mystery writer raped on her way home from a book signing in the middle of nowhere seeking revenge, a man dying of cancer at 51 who makes an irresistible deal with the devil, and a woman who discovers after over twenty-some years of marriage that her husband is a famous serial killer. It was raw, harsh, and dirty. I loved it! King makes no apologies in his afterword, in which he discusses getting into the darkness of his stories with a brutal honesty. He also mentions again that he writes for himself, not for the money, which is something as a writer I respect. When you start to write for the paycheck, it's time to retire because you aren't being yourself. And as King, I respect a writer more for tackling a harsh situation and getting in the dirt, rather than glossing over the uncomfortable topics and making unrealistic character decisions. Plus, as he says himself, a story with a good character in it is highly entertaining and memorable. And we all know King is a good study of the human condition. jhernandezb052
Jose Hernandez jhernandezb052 — Mixed feelings invade at this moment, having finished this beast. And it is a beast, emotionally and physically. At just under 1500 pages, the tome packs a punch in time and effort. That is why I struggled in deciding whether I really love this work or hate it. My feelings about the length almost reveal a more juvenile response in pure concern about "my time" being wasted. However, Richardson's opus magnum is very good and I can "almost" ponder coming back to this at a much later date. A good portion of the beginning is spent on character development and it can get a trite sloggy and boggy. Tenacity may be what pays off with this one, if due only to its length and the compelling story contained within.

fidel_chavarria
Fidel Chavarría fidel_chavarria — I enjoy Tahir Shah's books, and learned so much about Ethiopia. Walking the gold trail of the ancients was interesting, but this was not my favorite work by Shah. At book club, one of the critiques was that Mr. Shah can sometimes seem a bit condescending towards the people he writes about, and I felt that in this book. Perhaps it was his yearning to follow in the footsteps of those Europeans who organized similar expeditions before him, but it came across as somewhat imperialistic to me. But you've got to hand it to him, it takes courage (or insanity!) to make the journey that he did and I appreciated his story of how the Ethiopians live.
