Den Kornilov den_kornilov — ***NOTE MY REVIEWS OFTEN CONTAIN SPOILERS*** Right before she dies, Grace Cahill changes her will; she’d had the backup will written for some time but the decision to use it was made in her dying moments. When her hoards of relatives descend of her funeral, most of them vultures hoping for money, only 40 are chosen to attend the reading of the will. Each of them is given and envelope and a choice. They can take the envelope, one million dollars and walk away or they can forfeit the envelope in exchange for a clue, the first of thirty nine that if they succeed will lead them to power unrivaled. Amy and Dan Cahill feel lost without their Grandmother. Grace was the one highlight in the orphan siblings’ lives and without her they don’t know what they’ll do. When given the option their guardian Aunt Beatrice tells them they don’t have a choice, they will take the money which she will then put into a bank account for them and of course only keep the interest to reimburse her for supporting them. Amy knows that means she plans to take their two million along with her million and leave them destitute. The money won’t be a secure future for her it will be gone the minute Beatrice can get her hands on it and there will be nothing she or Dan can do about it. There isn’t a choice, it was Grace’s dying wish that she take up the challenge and even though Beatrice threatens to send them to Social Services if they refuse the money they decide it’s a risk worth taking. What they don’t count on is the other relatives in their family tricking them, stealing their clues and trying to kill them. Nor do they consider just how far the journey will take them. With the help of their Au pair Nelly they must evade their aunt’s private detective who wants to find them and take them away while staying alive and finding the next clue. But as completely unprepared as they are for this kind of undertaking do they really stand a chance? I read this book because my daughter has been begging me to buy her this series for a while. So I began with the Maze of Bones to learn if this series was something I think is both appropriate for her and something she’ll enjoy. I wasn’t surprised to find that Riordan has brought a stunning series opener to the series. Though the book is quite short (at least by adult standards) it’s not any less thrilling than an longer novel. The novel is written in the same style as Michael Scott’s The Immortal Secrets of Nicholas Flammel series. What I mean by this is each book is a small installment of the journey and when things really begin to pick up the book ends and you have to wait for the next installment before continuing the journey. You always know where you’re going next but you’re already ready to go there, but since you don’t yet have the next book you can’t. This can be pretty disappointing if you’re not prepared, but from what I understand the majority of this series is already out, so you shouldn’t have to wait long between installments and actually could buy them all before you begin reading. Though I don’t know how the other installments will be considering the book is written by a group of writers, not just one I do know that the opener is an entertaining third person novel that reminds me of both Scott’s Flammel Series and Riordan’s Kane Chronicles. Maybe a mix of the two, you’ve got the brother and sister team who have the odds stacked against them, but are prepared together to take on the world. While it’s exciting and the children do face a lot of danger, it’s filled with historical facts, though I can’t say if all of them are accurate or not because I’m not really a Ben Franklin history buff. I mean like most people I know the basics but I couldn’t say as to whether or not he wrote an essay on farts or other strange tidbits. Obviously some of the stuff included has been edited to fit the story for example him being part of the Lucian branch of the Cahills is probably just a part of the fiction but it does include many actual historical facts about Ben Franklin and if kids do enjoy the books it might make them want to go and find more of the real facts on Ben Franklin. I could definitely see my children researching to find out if Ben Franklin really did write a letter about farts because that’s something of interest to children. I think most adults will enjoy the novel as a onetime read, more appropriate for a library check out than a purchase but I can see this as a series that children will read again and again. If you’re a parent who enjoys middle grade fiction it’s an ideal purchase because it’s a novel that both you and your children will enjoy. The characters were a mix of stereotypical and well developed. Secondary characters like the Holts fit nicely into the stereotype of the dumb jock or military jerk. Irina fits the evil Russian KGB spy stereo type, the Kabra children are the evil cut throat rich kids, and Alistair is the smooth talking backstabber. Aunt Beatrice has the wicked stepmother stereotype down really well. And Jonah Wizard is the self absorbed movie star stereo type to round out the bunch. However Grace the dead grandmother has an air of mystery about her that I look forward to learning more of and her lawyer William I’m not quite sure whose side he’s on. They’re not really well developed, but neither are they stereotypical either. I think they’re left a mystery because really building those characters would give away some of the story to come. But I’m really curious as to what we will eventually learn about those two. Amy and Dan however are really well developed characters who will be easy for kids to relate to or at the very least feel for. They both have great strength and great weakness and what’s great about these children is that while they have their mature moments they are clearly children. They act older at times because of circumstances, but in one scene where Dan breaks into tears after losing the only photo he has of his parents you can see how hard it is for them to be so much like an adult facing expectations that children their age should not have to face while being hunted by their own family members who should instead be showing them love. Riordan brings your right inside of the two leading children and makes you feel for them. Additionally they’re babysitter Nellie is decently developed as a character as well though not to the point of the children. Considering how much we’ve learned about the leading characters in this novel I’m wondering how a different writer is going to pick up the next installment of this story and have the characters feel the same as they do in this one. I look forward to finding out if they can. Overall I’d recommend this more for a middle grade reader who enjoys mysteries and adventure, and probably kids who enjoy riddles as well. I think adult readers will enjoy the book as a quick one time read, but it’s not really as much of a kids novel that transcends ages, more of a kids novel written specifically to the target age group.
