Vladimir Konovalov 2a46m — Well, it only took me 14 years worth of attempts to read Fellowship, but I finally finished it. I LOVE the LOTR movies. Love them. I love the epic-ness of it all. As I was reading this, I found myself able to picture that epic-ness so much better because of the movies. Tolkien's writing loses me a bit: I always think when an author mentions something a few times, it has to be important. Not so with Tolkien. Some of the descriptions got a bit lengthy, and felt unnecessary, but they also helped me to realize just how dedicated to his world Tolkien was. He created this entire world with a huge history and languages and loved it so much, and that definitely comes across in the writing, even if that writing gets a bit bogged down at times. But I love the characters. I love Legolas and Gimli, and I love that the occasional light-hearted moment was thrown in there. I love that Aragorn came across as so kingly, and yet so humble. And Sam. Oh Sam. He is my absolute favorite. Not sure I'll re-read this a bunch of times, but I'll probably read the other two books. Eventually. I just hope it won't take my 14 years.

Matheus Bussolotti bussolotti — I like unique things. This is unique. It's a thin, long, hardcover book, so it looks a bit like a picture book. Sometimes it has panels, sometimes one illustration takes up a full two-page spread. It's autobiographical, and issue-based. I was impressed with the vulnerability and openness of the narrator. And illustrations are stunning - the black and white only adds to it. I've always lived in the same house. So one of my fantasies, growing up, was what it would be like to live somewhere else. In the house I'm passing on the road. Under that overpass. In that tree. Swiss Family Robinson, The Borrowers, and the Laura Ingalls Wilder books were some of my favorite stories growing up. Anyway, so that's probably why I'm extra-fascinated by this depiction of life lived in the subway system. There is a definite narrative, and it dances around issues of poverty, race, class, home, identity, friendship, family, and of course... I LOVED the discussion of art, what is art, who are artists. LOVE. The more I think about it, I feel more LOVE for this book.
