Joe Branton _oseph_ranton — This book deserves a 5 for the character of Miguel. But...I would not have finished it had I not been working through my daughter's reading list for a YA fiction course. The rest of characters were far, far too dysfunctional, as if the author wanted to include every bad thing that could happen to kids and push them into the criminal justice system. And, for that kind of book, it is at least 100 pages too long. I guessed the "big revelation" in the first thirty pages and started skimming after page 200. This review, though, should be filtered through the fact that I seldom make it through Oprah's book club selections which are also usually populated with dysfunctional characters.

John Spots spotsjohn — Worth a read if you like a good story line and are interested in the Irish culture complete with the perverse power of the clergy. The style is a little tricky to get used to as it is the story of a 100 yr old woman who keeps a journal and the corresponding story of her psychiatrist trying to assess why she is in an insane asylum. Then every now and then there is a current reference ( like to Sadaam Hussein). But I kept looking forward to picking it up ....
