This coming of age story follows Clem Ackroyd's life from the way in which his parents met during World War II, his childhood and youth in Norfolk, England after the war, his teen years during the Cuban missile crisis, up to the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York on September 11, 2001. It is , then, a Boomer's life, albeit a British Boomer's life. Several times it put me in mind of another YA novel, "Countdown" by Deborah Wiles, which examined coming of age during the Cuban missile crisis from this side of the pond. Much of the book recounts the budding romance of Clem and the wealthy landowner's daughter, Frankie. As the romance heightens in tension, the standoff between the USA and the Soviet Union over the construction of missile bases in Cuba creates a parallel tension. Mr. Peet seems to have done a lot of research into the period, and intersperses the text with behind-the-scenes conversations and meetings of politicians and military leaders in both Washington D.C and Moscow. It's an interesting look at the time period from a British perspective.
