Oprah picking it didn't help the cause either, as I have an aversion to all things fad-ish. But it was a Valentine's gift that will go up there among the best -- I resonated with each character at different moments. Tolstoy is a master of varying points of view as well as creating sympathetic villians and dangerously flawed heroes (and heroines.) I busted through this just to know how it ended -- now I'm reading it again but savoring each word. My dork of a boyfriend tells me this is the best translation. It is so lyrical and moving that you forget it was originally written in Russian. Quite a feat. In a few words: masterfully compelling.

Aylin Yesilyurt _esilyurt — ** spoiler alert ** I should start off this review saying the book has adult topics of sex, rape,attempted rape, abuse, and murder. None were done in too graphic of detail but they were there. With that being said the whole idea of the book was very intriguing. The whole world created by the author of punishment being fixed for every crime no matter the reason (except we find in certain instances) was interesting. In some ways it reminded me of the spirit of the law and the letter of the law. I also thought the whole idea of her being give the choice between escaping the noose or become the food taster for the commander was interesting. I liked the relationship between Yelena and Valek. I really did enjoy this book and had a hard time putting it down. Thanks again Ashley. ;)
