nunosi
Nuno Silva nunosi — Keyes does an excellent job of demonstrating his understanding of anthropology and "primitive" cultures. A little too much, at times. That being said, the characters are believable and very detailed, and the setting is amazingly complex and well conceived. This is a good one -- a marriage of high fantasy and a more spirit-based religious system -- the novel has the basic fantasy tropes combined with a few new ideas. The flaw? It reads a bit like someone transcribed their Dungeons and Dragons game as a novel. It isn't quite as transparent as Dragons of Autumn Twilight, but there are a few jarring moments which seem like nods to some sort of inside joke we're not privy to. Also, a number of events seem to be attempting to explain a sort of "game mechanic." In any case -- this is a good read, well worth an aftenoon.

mervesayar
Merve Sayar mervesayar — How this story came to be… When I wrote On The Edge, I needed to keep things short to fit into a submission call from one of my publishers at the time, Venus Press. That meant that a lot of background material did not make it into the story. It was still in my mind, though, and as readers asked me what happened the morning after the events of On The Edge, I started thinking about how to add to the story, and show how this first night turned into a lot more than that. Since I had figured out early on that Lisa and Leo’s Sire had something to do with why they had fallen apart, it made sense that to tell the story of their reunion I had to bring him back to Haventown and watch both Childer deal with their issues with him. I also wanted to show the evolution of Brett’s feelings. In On The Edge, he wasn’t thinking about much more than finding pleasure, and that was far from the loving relationship I had imagined between Brett and his two vampire lovers. I tried to show how his lust for Leo turned to trust and protectiveness – and eventually the beginning of a love that matched his feelings for Lisa. In the entire novella, there is one scene that gave me a lot of second thoughts: at one point, Lisa and Leo’s Sire coaxes them into having sex in front of him. While they are lovers and sleep together both before and after the incident, it wasn’t something they welcomed at the time. I seriously considered cutting the scene, but eventually decided to leave it in because part of the story is about these two vampires overcoming the influence their Sire wields on them and this was too crucial a moment in their evolution to cut. I thought I was done with these characters when I ended Over The Edge. I had taken them to a nice HEA, and although I was already thinking of having them play cameos in other stories set in their club, I had no plan to center another story on them. Suffice to say they did not agree with that decision!

hagar05
Hagar Ahmed hagar05 — This is of course a reference to Dante's first circle of hell... Amazing account of a select group of scientists, engineers, etc who were political prisoners at the highest level- the first circle. Essentially, they were too valuable to kill so they worked in a kind of R&D prison for the Soviet military/ industrial machine. I would recommend reading "One Day..." or "The GULAG" first as background, then this book- which is more interesting and written better.
