Xuxin Wang 244427384e380 — This was okay, but only okay. I've never really liked classics. But for a classic, it is somewhat entertaining--and from me, that's good. I enjoyed the tie to the earth and the importance of the land. Yet at the same time, I question that valuableness of it: because his moral-values began to slip when his monetary-values began to rise. It felt like it would never end. The story was too long... and so, by the end of the man's life, I was almost bored to tears. I don't understand why the book had to last until his death--there were enough places it could have ended and been a much better book. Also, why go all the way to death, when it didn't start with his birth?(But certainly if it had, I might have ripped out my eyeballs.) The best part is when they have to go South to stay alive and live in the city... because there was actually action happening! It was written in the style where the reader is just "plainly told" events and only sometimes gets to really experience inner feelings of the characters. Instead of being detailed and focused on one particularly interesting aspect or time frame of a man's life, with a rise in plot and then a conclusion--the author has chosen to do an "epic" style where we're just directly told the life of a man through highlights. I personally did not appreciate this writing approach. The misogyny is annoying. This is one thing I could do without in Eastern cultures--the negative treatment of women. I'm not a full blown feminist, but just the same it took a lot out of me to keep reading when it came to certain parts dealing with the treatment of women. After writing this I realize that if it hadn't been for book club, I most likely wouldn't have finished it. I will not be reading the sequels in the trilogy.

Adrian Demetrescu daemeh — This book is amazing. I loved how the begginging section was arranged by power food, so you can look immediately to the food itself for inspiration, and then go to the recipes that follow. I've made a few things from this cookbook and enjoyed them all.
