John Hovard salesf8fa — Book 3.5 *** Cover 4 **** I'm done reading this book. Oddly enough for me it felt like a big mash-up of elements taken from other books all put together to form a new and somewhat 'unique' concept. The characters were OK , the action was OK, the plot was interesting but it felt like a strange pile of ingredients put to boil in a cauldron. I'm kinda disappointed for spending my money on this book now, I'll give it to a second hand book shop in the future because the adventures aren't translated into my language for some reason the publisher stopped releasing the other 4 books. The reason why I picked up this book was because of the synopsis on the back cover. It was a magic formula for me when I read: 1 World War , dragons, steam engines - but in the end the characters travel to some remote imaginary place where some mixed up characters are causing havoc and destroying some islands from a map. I was utterly cringing while trying to read this because I didn't care for the characters that much and the lack of imagination was stressing me to much. I the parts that I liked were still too little to mention here but I adored the fact that some characters were underestimated in the beginning and then they developed and were stronger in the end. Somehow some plot aspects were pieced together in the end brilliantly and I felt surprised. But until I got to the end the reading was part torture part curiosity, I guess I'm much older now. Even though on the back of the book this was recommended for both middle graders and adults I felt like it didn't reach the older segment, for me it didn't work. I'd recommend this to anyone under 18 who likes fantasy but to those who are familiar to Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia -you'll see why!!!

Karim Tibi karimtibi — I have read only a few of Irving's books and don't really like them very much -- except for Cider House Rules. It is great and so is the movie.
