Having experienced the cruelty of hazing my freshman year by much larger boys, the savage nature and cruelty of youth was not shocking to me. I have used this as a teacher as well. My hope was that there might be a student that this book could speak to as it spoke to me. It is great for discussion... about cliques, about base nature vs. better nature...

Lewis Holden lewisholde45bb — This is a rather unique book whose meaning is not wholly revealed, at least for me, until the end. The writing is superb, and the irony and humor expressed by the central character from boyhood to age 34 is delightful. Historical events and people of the 1930s and 40s provide a significant backdrop for the story, but it is hard to know what to believe. One wonders how inventive Kingsolver is being for the sake of a story and to express a point of view. Nevertheless, the historial context is an integral and engaging feature of the story. Lacuna has multiple meanings--a physical place, an emotional state, and a symbol of not knowing the most important things there are to know about a person. Lacuna also represents for me the main character's relationship with the world around him and most of its people--a dissociation or lack of a place he can call his own. I sympathized with the main character and respected his attempts to live in the world on his own terms. The ending offers a satisfying resolution to his mounting dilemmas. I found Kingsolver's use of multiple story-telling voices an interesting device and was thoroughly engaged by this book.
