_awkward
Toni Chambers _awkward — The best part of this book is the game itself "Liar's Poker" and luckily it's described right at the beginning.

Charlotte Caron charlottej188b — Immaculee Ilabagiza gives her readers a look into life in Rwanda before and during the Hutu uprisings in 1994. The first hint that she had that something was not right took place when she was ten and had left the safe haven of her mother's schoolhouse to be enrolled in a school for older children. It was there that she learned about tribal rivalry when her teacher, Buhoro, demanded that all Tutsis stand up to be identified. She was totally clueless. Her parents had never told her brothers and her which tribe they belonged to. Tutsi? Hutu? Twa? Duh! However, she soon learned the difference. She was a Tutsi: a tribe of Rwandans who were hated by the Hutus. Actually, the tribal rivalry was not totally new to her family. An uprising had occurred in 1959 and 1973 when Tutsis were murdered in the streets, their houses burned, and their women were raped. Immaculee had not been born for the first one and was only three when the second one occurred. Should her parents have told her and her three brothers to be vigilant for any signs of violence? According to Imaculee, her mother and father were in denial. They were such strong believers in Catholicism, charity toward others, and that God would always watch over their family that they never felt a need to let the children in on their heritage. It was that very faith in God and a devotion to a prayer life which brought Ilbagiza though the Hutu uprising of 1994. Once it was in full force, her father sent her to seek refuge at Pastor Murinzi's house. He feared that once the hordes of Hutus descended on their village there would be rampant rapings, violence, and killings. It was there that she and seven other women were kept in hiding. For the next 91 days, they were housed in a 4' X 3' bathroom. It had a shower stall at one end and a toilet at the other. For more than three months she silently prayed the rosary while at unexpected intervals the Hutu hordes surrounded or invaded the pastor's house as they looked for Tutsis in general and Imaculee in particular. During their rampage they took the lives of nearly a million Tutsis! All of Imaculee's family was slaughtered except for her brother Aimable. Imaculee miraculously survived. She credits her salvation to her strong devotion to God and her fearless ability to confront death as it was staring her in the face. This book is a must read for anyone who doubts that faith can move mountains.

Arantxa Luengo _ranlue — The book makes you believe that if there were responsible people in charge a lot of suffering could be alleviated. An interesting book about hope.

张 涛 _illows — to be perfectly honest, i don't really like Melissa Bank's writing. i can't put my finger on it, but it's something along the lines of...i don't know. a self-possession that i find irritating; world-weariness in her late twenties. sometimes, i suspect, i am overly harsh.
