Vasil Enchev vasil_enchev — This was an excellent book. You should read it! It is intense from start to finish and the writing is tight and clean. The characters are compelling and believeable. The plot is always moving forward and it ends well. I highly recommend this book for some great reading!

Bogdan Porodko bporodkoe4e4 — ODESSA File shows us a very dark and brutal side of humanity. Although I do not know a single Jew, I have wept over and prayed for the millions of Jews killed during the Second World War. I have heard arguments that the Holocaust is just another ‘casualty’ of War. It is amazing that despite a full fledged war raging all around the world, the Germans had the time, patience, resources and the desire to annihilate millions of men, women and children. What is chilling about the Holocaust is the cold precision with which the SS and Gestapo hunted Jews and other ‘undesirables’ and murdered them. Every aspect of the annihilation was planned meticulously, from the rounding up to the extermination in gas chambers or crematoria. When you think that it is people going to such lengths to murder their own friends and neighbors your mind does a blank, it refuses to think, to accept that there can exist such people. But sadly they do. What is even more amazing is that there were people who also went to a great deal of trouble to hide, help and aid the Nazis. As we all know the Nazis were accepted with open arms in many Latin American countries, were these leaders so compassionate? What motivated them, greed? Do we all have our own price? When we take a good look at the Holocaust we are faced with a lot of questions that we should ask ourselves. A holocaust victim once asked “Where was God?” And he got a reply “Where was Man?” Just today, my friend Lilo wrote: 'But don't forget: Not all Germans were Nazis. And once Hitler was in power, non-Nazis were totally helpless. It took Hitler only a few weeks to turn Germany into a bomb-tight police state. And once this was accomplished, every opposition or dissent was equivalent to suicide.' And I reply with great humility, Yes Lilo, I agree. What do I know of being so frightened, so frightened that I cannot think straight, let alone stand up to the might of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, but through all that, despite being frightened out of their minds, despite being in grave danger, terrible danger to their own lives, many Germans did save Jews. There are no words for such heroism. Thank you for showing me another angle.

Laura Trompowsky lauratrspb7b5 — Almost a three star but it was enjoyable and a quick read so I won't go that low. Too many literary allusions--like Lord Peter Wimsey on a really bad day. Especially since the book ends on a quote that's only alluded to and not spelled out at all. I tried hunting for the reference in the novel and also online but to no avail. Oh well, not that interested to know anyway, unfortunately. Other than that, I enjoyed the story. Kind of a locked room mystery. Not told from the perspective of the "detective", an Oxford literary scholar, but mostly from that of one of his former students who was one of the few with a solid alibi. I kind of liked it that detective was rather annoying to most people and had some personality flaws. It made him more amusing and took away from the excessive allusions.

Michelle Seehafer michelles_reations — In this book, there is a plot, but it is not of central importance. Like "The Celestine Prophecy," the focus of the novel is the ideas presented. We follow a character in search of truth who makes many discoveries that we as the audience are supposed to make as well. This is not necessarily bad, one just needs to be ready for this kind of read.

Gary Gary garyonly6daf — Well written and surprisingly funny at points, Bhattacharya's in depth investigation of various polygamous Mormon sects in Utah is definitely worth a read for anyone interested in modern Mormonism, fundamentalism, and religious life in America. Hardly as sensational as Jon Krakauer's similar themed "Under the Banner of Heaven", Sanjiv Bhattacharya seems determined to remain objective and is present throughout the work as both a narrator and investigator. For the most part, his detachment is successful, although at times his frustrations with the secrecy of polygamy and disgust with the practices of certain groups and practitioners is evident. I regret that the book did not include more interviews with various independent practitioners and other major sects, and at times I wished the narrator/author was not as present in the arc of the book. Overall an engrossing and interesting read, if at times it read a bit like a long magazine article.
