Emmanuel Martin emmanuelmartin — Creepy nasty characters & not-your-typical evil make this an interesting read. Witches that live in swamps and stick their long talons through people, suicide by water mill, giant insects that suck blood through your neck -- gah! Lots of spooky scenes. I liked the creativity that went into this book. The main character is a teen who makes some poor decisions and ends up in trouble with both evil devil-following water witches and his master who fights for good. He's a bit weak at times, not defending himself when he probably should. He also asks lots of questions which sort of bugged me(Why is this evil being here? Is it out to get me? What was that noise?). Some of the worried boy's thoughts are repetitive, making me want to shake some sense into him. We answered that question two chapters ago! Get used to it! I like the character of Alice, the witch girl who is friends with the boy. She uses dark magic to help the good guys, but keeps getting into major trouble for doing so. At least she's gutsy. The end is very interesting, leaving the reader wondering what will happen in the next book. Characters may completely change sides, so that should be cool to read.
