Asis Rai asis1988 — Here's where my ignorance and intolerance really gets to shine. I really enjoyed the entire sword and the stone portion of the book. I managed to make it through the next couple of sections while gradually losing steam, and once it settled on Lancelot, I threw in my chain mail. Don't get me wrong (ok, get me wrong) I really enjoyed almost all of the characters (including lancelot) and most of the events should have been exciting, but the first bit was so silly and fun while maintaining a strange amount of seriousness. It really caught me, and it slowly trailed away from there.

Smallbear Ok northimage — “Arcadia Falls” – written by Carol Goodman and published in 2010 by Ballantine Books, an imprint of The Random House Publishing Group. I enjoyed this intricately woven story, and after reading the surprising finish, felt that the book was almost like the sturdy tower of a Jenga game. There were many layers and pieces that, as they were slid out in the telling, did not on their own completely alter things, but once the structure was weakened enough, out tumbled the true story. As in many other books I have enjoyed, the theme of stories was important, as the author said at the back of the book, “stories still have tremendous power.” The setting in rural upstate New York is an art-focused high school which had evolved from a haven for women artists and Goodman makes good use of the changing landscape. Some of her descriptions seemed a bit overdone, “The gold-tinged light that slants in through my classroom window bathes my students in an amber sap as if preserving them in the moment forever,” but overall, her descriptive style complemented the story. Side themes of mother-daughter relationships and a budding romance spice things up. As a historical mystery slowly unfolds, special attention is given to “a slim green leather book embossed with a gold fleur-de-lis” and although I lost track of " who did what when" every now and then, the whole package was likable and diverting.
