Costanza Annunziata connieannunziata — Richard II, King of England is a much maligned monarch. History has not treated him well and his role as the last Plantagenet king of England is a prelude to the War or Roses and the establishment of the Tudor dynasty. During his reign, Richard faced one of the first recorded peasant revolt in England as well as constant in fighting amongst his uncles, the sons of Edward III, one of the greatest English kings. After quelling the revolt and marrying Anne of Bohemia, Richard ruled for eight peaceful years until the death of his wife. With her ability to calm the king removed, Richard starts to take his vengeance on those who have failed him in the past. I read a lot of British history and while this is a fictional account, I must say that the author did a marvelous job of bringing Richard II to life. All of his decisions, be they good or bad, are presented with a plausible explanation. The author takes you into the mind of Richard II and showed you not an evil, vengeful man but simply a man who took the throne too young and had no one he could truly trust (besides his wife) to help him rule. His own instincts to rule as a benevolent king were constantly thwarted by his cousin Henry (later Henry IV) and his uncles, who were content to run the country as they saw fit, trotting out Richard only when immediate danger was present. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in early English history and the love story between the King and his first wife is deftly handled, without the typical sentimental drivel that many stories succumb to in order to reach a broader “romance” reader.

Christina Diab christinad1ac9 — This book is based on a true historical event, one that I hadn't heard of before, but that I found myself looking up information on during reading. Tilly was eight years old at the time of the disaster. Paul was only a baby (I did find it odd that 30 years after the event he was giving his age as 29!), but now he is researching what happened and producing a documentary on it. In the process, he interviews Dunne, the man who wrote the original report on the incident. The historical setting felt vivid, the characters for the most part well-drawn, and the story of the incident itself written in a very moving way. As you would expect, Paul's investigations turn up more than the original report covered, but in a fitting way. I come away from the book with a greater understanding of what it was like in the war for those in London, and an appreciation that being responsible for something is not the same as being to blame for it.

Guga Bachan _uga_achan — • Over the top romance creates real life humor. • It takes a little bit to get past the confusion of Cassandra's forays into romantic daydreams. • Outrageous romantic fantasies with purple prose abounding makes this read something to put a smirk on your face even as your cheeks burn. João Morais jclmorais — THis book is very dark, but has an important message that, although obvious, can be forgotten when one is in despair. This book pulled me out of a very ugly state of being.
