Raminta T _raminta — Amazing book. From the beginning, Marquez spins a yarn of this charmed family, the Buendias, who cross tedious and death-defying South American terrain with a few others, to found a village - Macondo. Fantastic and realistic elements interplay to produce a n eerily believable history of South America. The echos of events and certain words evoke a certain pathos as the repetition of tragedies unfold and curl up into a perfect circle of chaos, knowledge, love, revenge, fear, wisdom and ignorance. The closing of this circle -- the ending -- stuns one into revered contemplation. Read it as soon as you possibly can.

Haley Barber hfiglesd550 — I'm a huge fan of books where houses are one of the characters (see: House of Leaves, for example). I'd recently Tivoed The Haunting (the 1999 version) and was annoyed that while there were some good underlying ideas, the execution was cheesy and over-the-top. While browsing the horror aisle at a used bookstore, I saw Shirley Jackson's original novel, which is considered a classic ghost story, and decided to give it a try in hopes that it would retain the good parts of the movie and eliminate the Hollywood cheese. In short, The Haunting of Hill House is about a scientist who invites people who had previously experienced paranormal events to stay in Hill House and help him scientifically prove that it is haunted. It was written back in 1959, so a lot of the dialogue and ideas seems outdated. I was able to overlook this most of the time, but sometimes I just had to raise an eyebrow and thank the heavens I didn't live in such a conservative time. While the movie relies on in-your-face scares, such as phantoms floating down from the ceiling, the book goes in the opposite direction and keeps the horror mostly psychological. The supernatural events at times seem to be taking place solely in the main character, Eleanor's head; much of the book is ambiguous and leaves it up to the reader to determine whether the hauntings are real, or if Eleanor is going insane, and whether the house is the blame for her insanity, or if she's finally breaking down after an isolated life. The supernatural events are also only half described; a character sees something and screams for everyone to run, but the "something" is never described. In some ways it has a Jaws-like effect of heightening the terror, but on the other hand, left me desiring more. The final plot twist in the 1999 movie version regarding why Eleanor was invited to Hill House was not included in the book, which disappointed me. I was looking forward to reading a better-executed version of the concept, but it definitely would have been at odds with the subtle and ambiguous style of the rest of the novel. The Haunting of Hill House is a quick read for anyone looking for something creepy, but if you like a little bit more certainty to your novels, it might be a little too draw-your-own-conclusions for you. I'll probably reread it again in the future, now that all the expectations I had due to the movie have been stripped away. I expect I'll take something different from it now if I read it while trying to decide if Eleanor is insane or if the hauntings are real, instead of waiting for the scenes from the movie to occur.

Nichole John nicholejohb456 — In this lighthearted teen novel, the stereotypically quiet and stiff-upper-lip English girl Sophie Pitt-Turnbull switches homes for the summer with a girl who lives in Brooklyn. The book is written in a very conversational and humorous style, and it does a good job of explaining the culture shock that exists even between two countries that share a language and a partial history. The book is filled with British slang and an outsider's observations about American life, and I suspect it could appeal to fans of Louise Rennison's (admittedly much funnier) books. It's main weakness lies in its lack of character development. Although Sophie is the main character, we never really get to know her behind her British reserve, and the people she meets in Brooklyn never really develop beyond rough caricatures. This is the biggest shame, since the ostentatious and eccentric Brooklynites could have been a great addition to the plot. Nevertheless, it's the kind of fun book that could find many fans despite my nitpicking.

285m 285m 285_ — This was my favorite book of the series so far. I found the action to be riveting and the pace was great. I couldn't put it down until I finished it at 2:30 am. In this book, Leo is working through his delore (grieving over his dead son) and no longer blames Jane for his son's death. In fact, he hires her to be part of his security and she moves her things to New Orleans. In the last book, she made the choice between Bruiser and Rick. Since Bruiser is Leo's blood-servant, she knows that she will always play second fiddle to Leo and chooses Rick. The book begins with Rick and Jane having been dating for a month, but unable to spend a lot of time with each other because of their busy jobs. After Rick misses a breakfast date and then falls out of touch for days, Jane suspects that he had to go back undercover. On top of worrying for Rick, the werewolves and were-cats have come to town - the cats to parlay with Leo and the New Orleans vamps, and the werewolves to stir up trouble. As part of Leo's security team, Jane has her work cut out for her. To assist, she brings in her big guns, Derek Lee and his ex-military crew. I really like Derek and his team - they are professional, high-speed, badass marines. I would say that the only part of the books that goes a little slow for me, is when it is told from Beast's POV. I find that starts to get a bit tedious. But I am exciting for the way the book ended and can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
