Manuel Lopez lopezrevol — Overall, I really enjoyed this. On the other hand, King is unable to contain himself from including some remarkably tasteless scenes: one of which involves a black woman and a randy demon, I'll say no more. I particularly object to King's embarassing attempts to imitate 'black vernacular' speech in the character of Odessa. She 'talks lik dis' all the time which is pretty offensive at times: I'm sure Toni Morrison would have a heart-attack if she read this and saw King's depictions of black speech. I have to admit that I really don't think King is that good a writer at all. The writing in this book was riddled with cliches: I'm fairly sure that I came across the phrases 'cold as ice' and 'loud as thunder' within a sentence of each other. Definitely he has moments of inspiration in terms of imaginative power but he just doesn't make any attempt to control it. I think King's books would be much better if he plotted them rather than just making it up as he goes along: he just ends up rambling on and on and on, going here, there and everywhere until you have a bloated, sloppily-written novel like this one which could really benefit from condensed into a few hundred pages.

But then the Camerons are forced to accept an offer from Eleanor Latimer of a rent-free cottage on her estate. Ordinarily, such an offer is not to be sniffed at but as Eleanor happens to be Alex's beautiful, rich and frankly flirtatious ex, Imogen is very sniffy indeed. And with good reason. Once installed in Shepherd's Cottage, Imogen's life is suddenly full to bursting with surly locals, psychotic chickens, mountains of manure, visits from the infuriatingly bossy vet, and of course Eleanor; who seems to be permanently at Alex's side. As far as Imogen's concerned, two's a marriage, three's a family and this! well, this is just silly, someone's going to have to go. The question is who?
