Bai Ding _ai_ing — Loved, loved, loved it!!! Another "vacation bookstore" recommendation that I wasn't interested in at first and could find nothing better that wasn't deep, dark & depressing. Turned out to be one of my favorite books ever. What a "novel" idea, to take such an iconic American literature figure and create a history for her. Just great!

Leandro Fernandes _eandro_ernandes — if you want to debate me on anything to do with politics, social structure, or the order of things, it is a prerequisite that you read this first. otherwise i will start quoting chapter 6 (like gish taught me) and you will not understand, and i will shake my head at you, and you will call me a nerd, and yet i will win the argument.

Mitch Ross _itchy_ — I was interested in Katharine Graham's memoir because of her unique place in history as the respected owner, president, and chairman of The Washington Post during a time when few women held such positions of responsibility (well, and the book also won the Pulitzer Prize). Little did I know that because of her well-connected parents, her life story would read like a "Who's Who" for the 20th century from the opening chapter. But that's not what makes this a singular story – Graham's basic sense of fairness, genuine concern for others, and high standards and integrity in both her personal and professional lives radiate from every page. And she doesn't shy away from relating difficult - a few tragic - events in her life: A clear eye and frank analysis are applied to every up and down, but always in very proper manner. You won't find rumor or innuendo in this book (I had to go to Wikipedia for that). Graham's writing style is also, of course, the epitome of correctness, with a smooth and effortless feel. Though the book is fairly long, I couldn't put it down through the most crucial periods in her life – a good sign of a compelling life well-told.

Amir Veld aveldc78c — This book is the beginning of my project to read all of the books which have won the Man Booker Prize since 1969 when it was first awarded. The library didn't have the first book, but I wasn't planning to read them in order anyway.
