Connie Werner cwerner — Peter Klappert took up the mantle of the modernists, borrowed a wisecracking bartender in post-WWI Paris as a narrator, and wrote a brilliant, scathing, and hilarious book of poetry, and no one noticed.

ரஙகநதன ரஙகநதன ranganathan — Her style of writing is so lyrical. It reminds me of the beauty and depth of the Romantic Russian composers. I'd say the writing is more enjoyable than the actual story which is pretty dull. However, her ability to paint these everyday otherwise boring details is beautiful. The writing is engaging as she incorporates a good amount of self-examination/reflection.

Le Kors kors — This truly is an amazing work of fiction. I love the characters and the pace--two important elements for a mammoth book...for me, anyway. I also like its not-too-veiled religious symbolism and other double meanings. My favorite storyline is Larry Underwood's attempt to prove he isn't a selfish person, but I am also fascinated by every scene with Randall Flagg and his cronies in Vegas. Harold Lauder is also a favorite--I liked the bad guys, I guess...or the ones--like Larry--who perceive themselves as bad guys who want to change their ways. I finished this book while on break at work. One of my co-workers noticed I was reading it and asked what it is about. I thought about it for a second--and after trying to explain it to my wife to no avail the night before--I simply said it was about the permeation and seduction of perpetual evil. Those who know how the book ends hopefully catch my drift... MILD SPOILER... I really appreciate the risks King takes--my jaw dropped about five or...a hundred times during the last two hundred pages of the book. I know some don't like how many main characters are iced, but I think it takes a lot of courage to wipe out characters we've been reading about for 1000+ pages. I think a happily-ever-after ending would disappoint readers more.

Entrecot Life _ntrecot_ife — Not as good as some of Brad Thor's other books, but a nice quick read. Hopes he writes up some other books with the Athena Team.
