R Cantuario cantuario_9ada — It is always fascinating to dig deep into a historical event. This book is a wonderful example of the genre and related the immediate events of 1453 with the larger history of the time and place.

Carole Guevin featuredby — What a satisfying book. I loved the fact that it didn't try to hold the reader's hand by explaining what all of the Spanish phrases meant. That would have dumbed down the book for me. Really, that's what gives it its edge (that and the brutal violence). Diaz treats the reader with respect by not accomodating him, but also throwing him a bone with the footnotes. The story itself was great. Diaz jumped from voice to voice as narrator effortlessly. The way he portrays the backdrops of the DR and NJ really provided some great mental visuals. The Trujillo-era descriptions of the DR were so mob-like and sinister. It was almost like a Carribean godfather scenario. All of the different settings and stories in the book could have easily been fleshed out into separate books. Now that's talent! I have to say, I wish the story focused on Beli more. Lola and Oscar were very interesting, but Beli's story was epic. BWLOOW was an original and enjoyable read all around. Fear the fuku.

Angela Al angelaalacra — I think the best way to describe this book is as an unholy combination of Pride and Prejudice and Twilight. I will admit, I have read P&P more times than is healthy, so I like to think I know the characters relatively well. Indeed, most people who would read this book would have a fairly good idea of what these characters are like. That being said, I'm pretty sure the author picked Lizzy and Darcy to save herself the trouble of developing her own characters, and didn't really try to make her story fit with their established characters. I don't want to say the story is inherently bad, as different people enjoy different types of fiction, it just doesn't work with the characters so many people know and love. Also, the author's explanation about why Mr. Darcy is immune to the established vampire banes is novel but slightly ludicrous. And some parts of it are just plain illogical. If you're going to bastardize a classic piece of literature, at least pick one that no one actually reads, like Ulysses. Or Paradise Lost.

Gia Goodrich gia_goodrich — This one's such a wonderful headscratcher that it doesn't really deserve a description. I finished it a week ago, and I'm still thinking about its conclusion and its meaning. Charlie Kaufman would create one hell of a cinematic adaptation of this novel, I think.

Celia Jensen cfjensen322290 — Good, but I was reading rather quickly and didn't really get drawn too far into it. The "dream" scenes with the "Ghost Tree" were vaguely annoying because it sort of steps beyond the realm of realism but are probably necessary to deal with these types of deep feelings, similar to how fantasy can deal with issues of good and evil that would be cheesy in contemporary realistic fiction. The characters felt real and I thought that the realistic part of the ending was nicely and sensitively done.
