There were so many aspects I enjoyed about this book: Ms. Truong's poetic style of writing; the mouth-watering descriptions of words and the author's ability to truly get me to appreciate food; the emotional depth conveyed, as well as the vivid cast. Still, there was plenty that I didn't like, such as: the over-detailed history of North Carolina; the chaotic jumps in time; the overpowering dialogue; the abrupt change in pace from the first section to the second. See what I mean? For every pro there's a con lurking right behind. While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I'm not so sure I'll hold the same opinion a year from now. Hell, will I remember the characters and plot, or just the feel of the book? This is definitely one of those times I wish we had the option of a half point. Rather than judging on what might be, I think I'll just stick with the here and now. Giving it an extra 1/2 for sheer creativity and passion, I'm going with a 4. Flaws and all, this is a book that should be experienced.
