Ronny Diaz r_dm39c8c — So far: I'm mostly interested in selections involving heinous dictators: The Littlest Hitler and Tales of a Tyrant, an examination of the life of Saddam Hussein! I don't know why, but they're the most engaging pieces I've read thus far, and they're absolutely nothing alike. I mean, I'm pretty sure I have in fact been living under a rock ("solid as a rock!"... Arrested Development? Yes? Anyway...) for much of my life, but even so it felt surprising to realize how little I'd thought about the topic. I'd never really considered what it must be like to be Saddam Hussein or what it would be like to meet with him. Or even to live in a desert country. To actually fear for your life because you might not be able to complete a brick wall in under five hours ...Now I have. Er... thanks, Mr. Bowden.

Gianluca Grisolia _ianluca_risolia — The message of this book can be summed up by one quote from its last chapter: “To minimize suffering and to maximize security were natural and proper ends of society and Caesar. But then they became the only ends, somehow, and the only basis of law--a perversion. Inevitably, then, in seeking only them, we found only their opposites: maximum suffering and minimum security.” It is the story of a civilization once obliterated by nuclear war that lives to evolve into another society that even knowing what was wrought centuries ago, must wrestle with the choice to detonate again. I first tried to read this book in college as part of a humanities course entitled “Science Fiction.” I believe this was the third or fourth Sci Fi book I ever endeavored to read. I was unable to complete even the first section. The frequent uses of Latin words and phrases that are not translated and the descriptions of monastic life assume a familiarity with Catholocism that I did not (and still do not) possess. However, several more years of life experience, and a much more thorough knowledge of Science Fiction has enabled me to at least finish it and, I hope, to glean from it the sentiments I refer to above. I’m still not a huge fan of the book, but I now understand its place in that curriculum. I’m not sure I would recommend the text for that purpose, or to anyone who isn’t better versed in the genre than I am now. A background in Catholicism or at least a course in Latin would also help.

Andreas Petto _ettsoo — Crossed was fantastic! CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!!!!!! Just as good as Matched! Cassia is a very brave girl. She chases down Ky through insane danger and never gives up. I can't stand the way she won't choose between Ky and Xander. I like both of them, but I want her to be with Ky. Xander is more like a best friend love and Ky is a true love. She gave up everything for him and crossed lines that should never be crossed. I was upset that Vick died. I didn't think he would. I was glad he got to see a rainbow trout, but as he said before it was a bad omen. It brought him to his death. I wasn't surprised that Indie was stealing stuff and keeping secrets from Cassia. I was shocked that Xander was part of the Rising! I couldn't believe it. And now Xander has everything Cassia could want. Which makes me mad because Ky only joined the Rising for her. Now she is just going to forget him and move on. I don't trust the Rising either. I agree with Ky. I was glad that Eli chose to go with Hunter. I was surprised that Cassia didn't get her own vial from that cave. Seems like she would have kept it. I didn't like how Cassia and Ky had to be seperated in the end. They spent half the book looking for each other, the other half mad at each other, then they make up and now they don't even get to be together. seriously? How gay is that? I also wanted to read more lovey dovey scenes, but there were hardly none. That made me sad. Still it was an awesome book. I love the world Condie creates. It feels so real, like I am a part of it. I can picture and feel everything. She is truly an amazing writer. I loved the part where Cassia didn't know what dancing was. It made it so realistic and clear to me. It was a little surprising too. I can't wait to read the third book and I'm just hoping that Ky and Cassia will finally get to be together.
